Finnair flight delayed or cancelled: compensation and claims form

Finnair holds a European operating licence (EU or EEA), so EU261 protects its passengers on most of its flights. Here is when it owes you compensation, how much, and where to send your claim.

Claims form checked on 28 September 2026

€250Up to 1,500 km
€4001,500 to 3,500 km
€600Over 3,500 km, outside the EU

When you are covered

  • Departing from an airport in the EU, Iceland or Norway: covered by EU261, on every Finnair flight.
  • Flying into the EU from outside: covered too, because Finnair is a European airline, unless you already received compensation and assistance in the country you left.
  • Departing from the UK, or flying into it from outside: covered by UK261, the British version of the rules, with amounts in pounds.

Your nationality does not matter.

What counts

  • Arriving at your final destination 3 hours or more late. The delay is counted when the doors open, not at take-off.
  • A cancellation announced less than 14 days before departure, unless the new flight left no more than 1 or 2 hours earlier and arrived less than 2 or 4 hours later, depending on how early you were told.

How much

  • €250 for flights up to 1,500 km.
  • €400 for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and for every flight over 1,500 km within the EU.
  • €600 for other flights over 3,500 km; the airline may pay half if you arrived 3 to 4 hours late.

From the UK: £220, £350 or £520 for the same distances.

The distance is measured in a straight line between the airports, from the first departure to the final destination of the same booking. After a cancellation, the airline may halve the amount if the new flight got you there no more than 2, 3 or 4 hours late, depending on the distance.

When Finnair may not have to pay

Only if it proves that extraordinary circumstances caused the delay or cancellation and that it took every reasonable measure to avoid it, including another flight. Bad weather, air traffic control restrictions, security events or strikes outside the airline can qualify. A technical fault, or a strike by the airline’s own staff, usually still counts as its responsibility.
