easyJet strike on 16 October 2026: your rights if your flight is cancelled

easyJet’s flight crew in Italy have called a 24-hour national strike for Friday 16 October 2026. A strike by an airline’s own staff is not an extraordinary circumstance: if your flight is cancelled at short notice or arrives 3 hours or more late, easyJet may owe you compensation.

What is happening

  • When: Friday 16 October 2026, from 00:00 to 23:59.
  • Who: the flight crew, pilots and cabin crew, of EasyJet Airlines Limited in Italy, on a strike called by the USB Lavoro Privato union.
  • Which flights: easyJet flights to and from Italian airports may be cancelled or delayed. In Italy, flights scheduled to depart between 07:00 and 10:00 and between 18:00 and 21:00 are guaranteed by law.

The same day, separate 24-hour strikes have been called by security staff at Venice airport and by airport staff at Pisa and Florence.

When easyJet owes you compensation

A strike by the airline’s own staff, called by a union, is part of its normal activity, not an extraordinary circumstance (EU Court of Justice, Airhelp v SAS, C-28/20). So the usual rules apply:

  • Cancelled flight: up to €600 if easyJet told you less than 14 days before departure, unless the new flight it offered kept close to your original times.
  • Delayed flight: up to €600 if you reached your final destination 3 hours or more late.

From an Italian airport the rules are EU261: €250, €400 or €600 depending on the distance. On a flight from the UK to Italy, UK261 applies, in pounds.

If the cause is the airport strike

A cancellation or delay caused by the strike of airport or security staff, at Venice, Pisa or Florence for example, is normally an extraordinary circumstance: the airline does not have to pay compensation. It still owes you everything below.

What easyJet owes you anyway

  • A refund or another flight: if your flight is cancelled, you choose between a refund of the ticket and a flight to your destination at the earliest opportunity, or at a later date that suits you.
  • Meals, drinks and a hotel while you wait for the new flight, and a hotel if the wait runs overnight.

Keep the receipts of what you spend: the airline has to reimburse reasonable costs it should have covered.

How to claim

Check your flight in Dueply: it finds what happened to it, asks what easyJet told you about the cause, and prepares the letter for easyJet’s claims form, with no commission.

If easyJet refuses or does not answer, for a flight departing from Italy you can turn to ENAC, Italy’s civil aviation authority. Claim as soon as you can: the time limit depends on the country.
